Chaka Sucúa
Chaka Sucúa project provides comprehensive educational support to economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Basic General Education at the Julio Padilla Educational Unit in the Sucúa canton during the school year (September – June).
The main objective is to reduce school dropout and absenteeism in the upper basic level by directly supporting adolescents to improve their quality of life and become role models within their communities.
This project emerged in response to statistics from the institution, indicating that 12% of students drop out each year. The main causes include poor academic performance, emotional problems, pedagogical and methodological factors, economic situation, and early pregnancy. For adolescents, the result frustrates their life project, leading to a life of difficulties, falling into addictions, and increasing premature pregnancies. According to the Ministry of Education, the highest school dropout rate in Ecuador is in Morona Santiago at 12.42%.
The activities carried out by the Chaka Sucúa project from Monday to Friday for 3 hours include:
- Nutritious lunch.
- Academic support.
- Teaching and practicing values.
On the other hand, academic support for this group of young people is crucial because some of them have Spanish as their second language, as they speak Kichwa. The exams for entering higher education are limited to Spanish, putting them at a clear disadvantage due to the language barrier.
In addition to academic support, it’s important to mention that within the project, we aim to ensure that young people interested in continuing their higher education can connect with institutes or universities according to their interests. So far, 15 young people have graduated from high school, and several have successfully continued their studies.
