Located in the virgin Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, within the Cuyabeno Reserve, Tapir Lodge is a different company, where you can have a unique experience in the world. With its unique and comfortable accommodation, Tapir caters to guests looking to venture into the jungle and witness some of the most wonderful shows on earth.
This Rainforest Lodge will fill you with sightings of Flora and Fauna, its hammocks will tempt you to take a “nap”, the bar will seduce you with tropical delicacies and traditional Ecuadorian foods, only with the freshest ingredients that will keep you fit for any adventure.



During the excursions, you will be accompanied by a licensed multilingual naturalist guide. The guide will inform you about the activities of the next day on the previous night, after dinner. Note that the guide can adjust to the itinerary due to weather conditions or the needs of the guests. On the first day of all our programs, you will be assigned life jackets and rain ponchos, rubber boots can be obtained the next day. This equipment will be your responsibility during your stay and must be returned to a Tapir Lodge representative on the last day of the program. Please bring this equipment with you when necessary or according to the guide’s advice. Although the Cuyabeno River is very serene, we remind all customers to wear their life jackets at all times during canoe excursions. Rubber boots should be used on all excursions and we recommend that you use your rain clothes at all times.

Tour Plan


DAY 01

Meeting point in the city of Lago Agrio. You can reach the meeting point either by plane or bus. From Lago Agrio you will be taken by private transport (pick-up, double traction vehicles or buses), which will have a ride duration of 2 ½ - 3 hours from “El Puente” (El Puente), which is the entrance to the Cuyabeno Reserve.
Throughout this trip, you will have the opportunity to see beautiful landscapes created by the combination of jungle, rivers and small towns. 60% of this road is paved, while 40% is open road, this means that they can suffer weather conditions, you could expect a dusty or muddy road. In “El Puente” you can enjoy your Box Lunch and continue your trip through motorized canoes (12mts. / 24 feet long), the luggage will be covered with plastic for protection, and thus prevent it from getting wet in case of rain.
We also have water ponchos and life jackets. You will pass through a narrow river, where you can admire the great variety of flora and fauna that the Cuyabeno Reserve has to offer.
After approximately 2 hours and means of navigation, you will arrive at sunset at Tapir Lodge (5: 00-18: 00). Dinner is served at approximately 07:30 pm, after dinner, the information guide of the following day's activities, and the necessary equipment. The first night will be spent in the cozy hostel where you can admire the great variety of flora and fauna that the Cuyabeno Reserve has to offer. After approximately 2 hours and means of navigation, you will arrive at sunset to Tapir Lodge (5:00-18: 00).

DAY 02

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, you will travel by canoe, upstream, to explore the unique ecosystem of Laguna Grande. While navigating the Igapo, ancient and majestic trees create the ideal habitat for epiphytic plants, such as bromeliads, orchids, ferns and cacti.
Your adventure will continue to Tierra Firme, where you can take a walk for the rest of the morning. You can find an introduction to the ecology of the rainforest and observe an incredible variety of birds such as woodpeckers, parakeets, macaws and toucans. Here you will have the opportunity to observe a couple of monkey species.
After a delicious lunch and time to relax at the Tapir Lodge, you will sail back to Laguna Grande, where you will enjoy a wonderful sunset, surrounded by jungle animals such as bats, bugs and frogs; If the weather permits, have the opportunity to go swimming and enjoy the lagoon.
After a day of adventures, you will return to the lodge where dinner will be waiting for you. After dinner you will enjoy a quick walk at night, around the lodge to explore the wonders of the rainforest night.

DAY 03

After breakfast, you will navigate the Cuyabeno River until you reach the local community, where you will experience the daily life of the community and its activities such as harvesting and cooking. You will have the opportunity to buy handmade crafts, which are produced by the locals. Your visit will end with the Shaman, at home, where he will share his knowledge about the rainforest and the processes he uses to heal his people. Here you get to experience an ancestral healing ceremony that has been transmitted through the generations.
In the afternoon, you will meet with a local Siona family. They will show you and invite you to participate in the preparation of cassava bread. This local dish, prepared with cassava root, represents an important part of the local diet and the main source of carbohydrates for the indigenous communities of the jungle. Once you have tried cassava bread, we will return to the Tapir Lodge to spend another night in the middle of the jungle.

DAY 04 (valid only for the 5 days itinerary)

On this day, you will have the option to choose your activities with the guide. There are several options available, ranging from bird watching, canoeing, or jungle trekking. According to the type of activity you prefer, the day will be scheduled to meet your interests. Lunch will be served at the Tapir. In the afternoon you can enjoy some leisure time and sunset over the lake.
After the farewell dinner you can enjoy a fruit cocktail, meet with staff members and exchange questions and impressions.

DAY 05 (this is the day 04 for the 4 days itinerary)

After breakfast, we will have free time to organize before leaving Tapir Lodge. The departure time is usually 10am to 11am depending on the flight times, the river and the road conditions as well as the guide's decision.
The staff will take care of the luggage and make sure everything is loaded in the canoe. We will leave Tapir on its way back to “El Puente”. Private transportation will be waiting for you to take you back to Lago Agrio.

Note: Please, the committed itineraries are a guide. All routes and programs may change without notice due to national Park policies and regulations, weather conditions, seasonal changes, safety reasons and wildlife found during the trip. During excursions,  guests will be escorted at all times by a multilingual and naturalist guide at the Cuyabeno Reserve. Guests will be informed daily about the following day’s activities by their guide on the night, prior to dinner.

The guide may adjust the itinerary due to weather conditions or guest requirements.

On the first day of all our programs, guests will be assigned life vests and rain ponchos; rubber boots will be supplied on the following day. This gear will be the guest’s responsibility throughout their stay and must be returned to a Tapir Lodge representative on the last day of the program.

Please bring this gear with you when required and or advised by the guide. Even though the Cuyabeno River is quite serene, we remind and request our guests to wear their life vests at all times during our canoe excursions. Rubber boots must be used during all treks and we recommend you keep your rain gear with you at all times.
